What Is ACH Return Code R06?
ACH return codes are used to identify the reason an ACH payment has been returned by the recipient's bank. They make it easier for originating and receiving financial institutions to spot and communicate payment failures.
ACH Return Code R06, also known as "Returned per ODFI's Request," is a standard code used in Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions. R06 indicates that the originating depository financial institution (ODFI) has returned the transaction because of an issue identified on their end.
How To Address ACH Return Code R06
Nacha prescribes separate rules for handling each return code since each one represents a unique scenario. ODFIs (Originating Depository Financial Institutions) and RDFIs (Receiving Depository Financial Institutions) are responsible for handling ACH return codes according to these rules.
R06 typically occurs when the ODFI suspects a transaction is fraudulent, because the transaction included incorrect information, or because the ODFI has specific instructions from the account holder to return the transaction. Because of the nature of R06, there is no specific time frame in which the ODFI must return the transaction with the code R06.
If you encounter R06, the first course of action is to contact the ODFI directly for an explanation of why the transaction was returned. Based on their feedback, you can alter or re-attempt the transaction accordingly.
